What's going on here?
I came across a boatload (did you catch that?) of high quality wood for free.
That's why I originally decided to build Lil Woody. My lack of expertise did not
allow me to know that the free wood I had for the sides of the boat would be
the least of my expenses. Live and learn...
When I am not on the road with work, or building a boat "on the hard", I live on
a boat. It is a fun lifestyle where I have met many interesting people. The
best part of living on a boat is that if I don't like my neighbors, I just crank up
and move. Anywhere I go, the scenery is always great. .
I thought about building a boat for years - all the way back to my college days.
The free wood made me decide to proceed. I have big boat, but it has its
limitations.
First of all, big boats are very expensive to operate. If you are looking at
buying a big boat and a seller says "economical to operate," always
remember "economical" is a relative term. Burning 15 gallons an hour in my
boat translated to about fifty bucks at marina gas prices. That's not
economical to me. Let's just say I'm frugal.
Secondly, a big boat has it navigational limitations - draft, maneuverability,
etc. Getting the Ship of Fools into and out of my slip the marina on a windy
day offered some nerve racking moments and permanent scuffs on my boat
that will always remind me of these limitations. While trying to fish off my boat
I realized this even more. Fishing open water was great. But trying to get into
the shallow and more undisturbed areas of the lake proved difficult.
And C - Boats are designed for specific uses. My big boat was designed for
living and cruising. I wanted a small, maneuverable, and economical boat. As
the boat will ultimately wind up fishing the marshy areas and tidal creeks off
the coast of Georgia, I needed a shallow draft but I don't like flat bottom
boats. I wanted it small enough to pull behind a mid-size SUV or truck. I
wanted it wide enough to move around and have 2 or 3 people aboard. I
wanted a high freeboard to feel safe if weather or large wakes ever kicked up.
I wanted it economical and dependable. This is how the design of Lil Woody
came about.
This website is to document my trials, tribulations, and joys for others out
there with similar interests.
